Sphere Molds for Father’s Day | June 15, 2017

Sphere Ice is cool.  Since Tovolo released out first Sphere Ice Molds in 2011, cocktails have never been the same. Before then, if you knew where to go and were willing to wait 30 minutes for your drink, you could get perfect cubes or spheres hand-crafted by a bartender so dedicated to their craft that they would actually match your ice to your drink.  Crazy, right? Ahh, the olden days were a kooky time.

Now, Tovolo makes Spheres, Perfect Cubes, King Cubes, Colossal Cubes, Perfectly Clear Spheres and Cubes, and if that weren’t enough variety, you can even get a Skull or Tiki shaped ice in your glass.  What do all these great Tovolo Ice Molds have in common?  They all make stellar Gifts for Dad!

Whether you have an easy going dad, a meticulous dad, a prankster dad, or just a dad who takes his cocktails seriously, Tovolo has an ice mold to put a smile on his face and a chill in his glass.

I always have a few pre-made Sphere Ice in my freezer.   The best way to store your Tovolo ice is to make the desired shape, unmold ice from the mold, and place the ice in a container or freezer bag back in your freezer.  Silicone, frozen water, and time are not great friends. Anytime you make ice using silicone molds you want to unmold the ice when frozen and store the ice in something else.  This also frees up your ice molds to make (dramatic pause) more ice!

My father’s favorite drink was a Manhattan.  I remember eating the orange peel out of his glass when I was little.  Every time I smell the combination of whiskey and oranges I think of him. The Manhattan is a perfect Sphere mold kind of cocktail because you definitely want the cocktail cold but it doesn’t need to be frigid.  The Sphere shape also allows the ice to melt slowly so the cocktail doesn’t become diluted while you are sophisticatedly sipping away.

Cheers to all the Dads!

MANHATTAN COCKTAIL

YIELDS 1  |  PREP TIME  Easy & Fast  |  PRINT PDF

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 parts Whiskey (this is primarily what you are going to taste so treat yourself!)
  • 1 part Sweet Vermouth
  • 2-3 dashes of Agnostic bitters
  • 2 Ice Spheres
  • 1 generous twist of orange peel (I use about and eight of the orange peel for drama)
  • Maraschino cherry for garnish
DIRECTIONS

Using your Tovolo Cocktail Shaker, add one Sphere to the shaker and then add whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters to the shaker.  The lid of the shaker does double duty but also being a jigger. Pour the contents of the shaker into a double old fashioned glass already prepared with your second Sphere.  Peel your orange twist over the glass so that all of the lovely orange oil mists into your cocktail and swirl the peel over the top of the glass before placing the peel into your cocktail.  Finish with a maraschino cherry.

Happy Father’s Day!
